Jessie Reyez @ Mod Club
There’s nothing I love more than seeing someone from this city flourish before my very eyes. I’ve been tracking the accelerating career of Jessie Reyez for a minute – from run-in’s with JAY-Z to praise from Chance The Rapper after an incredible BET Awards performance, it’s clear that she is destined for something amazing. Watching someone from your city on this trajectory is personally one of the most inspiring things to witness. So, when I walked past the venue at 5pm and saw a lineup already forming, I knew this would be a special night.
This was the last stop on Jessie’s North American Kiddo Tour, and she made her sold out homecoming at Mod Club extra special with appearances by Chicago’s King Louie, Allan Rayman, and Alessia Cara. Standing in the crowd for these kinds of special guest appearances, especially 3 heavy hitters back to back to back, is so amazing. Feeling the crowd react (i.e. being hit from all sides by people feverishly trying to whip out their Snapchats) and the energy go up that extra notch that you didn’t even think it could is bloody incredible.
A personal highlight for me was when Jessie played her hit “Figures” – just her, her guitar, and her 600-ish backup singers in the audience. It’s something else entirely to watch an artist be so emotionally moved that they stop singing, only to have literally everyone in the building pick up and carry on for them. With her family in the upper balcony holding a Colombian flag over the railing and fans staying well past the end of the show to meet Jessie at the merch booth, the support and appreciation for this hometown hero was undeniable.
I still feel so, so lucky to have been there to capture this. See the full set of photos over on Rap Season here, who never ceases to amaze me with the talent they bring to Toronto and the opportunities I’m given as a result. S/O RAP SEASON ilu fam.
