Talib Kweli @ The Phoenix
Talib Kweli blessed Toronto’s hip hop heads with a show they won’t soon forget on February 24th at the Phoenix, shortly after breaking the hearts of said Toronto hip hop heads when he cancelled the original show on February 3rd due to travel delays. Opening for the Brooklyn legend he had Chicago’s K’Valentine, his tour DJ, DJ Spintelect, and Toronto’s own DJ Agile. Talib was slated for an hour long set, and much to the joy of everyone in that room he well surpassed it and topped it all off with a finale of fan favourite Get By (because duh).
Ok I promise these super retrospective posts won’t be the norm but this show in particular was a major milestone for me. Talib Kweli was the first rapper that I ever saw live. Ever. Little did I know it was the beginning of something that would one day become the centre of my universe.
But before you’re like “damn you were a pretty cool grade 10 kid huh” I have a confession. I can’t lie to you guys. It’s not like I was seeing Talib at some super grungy hole in the wall venue in BK or something. No. He was opening for the Black Eyed Peas in my hometown of London, Ontario. And no, this was not the pre-Fergie BEP (which may have been my saving grace). But w/e. I was not missing my chance to see Talib. And I have no regrets. In the heart of the floor seats surrounded by kids in blinged out BEP merch sitting in between their parents, I stood up for Talib and my dreams came true.
